In 1852, Wausau was established as a town, and then later on in 1861, it was established as a village. It wasn’t until 1872, that Wausau became a city. Over the years of the city’s development, Wausau has experienced many economic downturns. However, with the arrival of the railroad, the help of the Wausau Insurance Companies and several city development projects, Wausau is now performing quite strongly in terms of financial performance.
When visiting Wausau, there are many leisurely activities tourists can do such as a go shop at the Wausau Center shopping mall, or stroll around and watch performances at the 400 Block which is a large, open, grassy block. Tourists and locals alike can watch sports at the Athletic Park or go skiing at the Granite Peak Ski Area. There are also activities tourists can do that is unique to the city such as take on a world-class kayak course that Wausau is famous for or learn a thing or two at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.
Education does not fall behind in Wausau. There are two universities in Wausau as well as several satellite campuses. There are also public schools, charter schools, and private schools that families can choose from to get the best education for their children. Transportation in Wausau is quite easy and its main transit system is the Metro Ride. Tourists can arrive at Wausau via the Central Wisconsin Airport or the Wausau Downtown Airport.
