The township’s motto is “Where Families Grow, and Businesses Prosper…”; it is home to 57,123 residents, based on the 2000 Census Bureau estimate – this is an increase of several thousand inhabitants since the Census of 2000.

The Township of West Chester is the 13th (and last) in order of creation and was created due to petitions from the residents. On June 2, 1823, the Butler County Commissioners granted this petition and created the township from Liberty Township. It was named as Union Township but because the place was commonly called as West Chester and the fact that many townships in the state have “Union” as name, the name was changed on June 28, 2000 as West Chester Township. Still, because the change came more than a hundred years after the township was created, many of the documents, records, and census data (including the 2000 Census) of the township refer to Union Township.
