Although the modern town of Whakatane is much like any other, in New Zealand or elsewhere, this area has been settled by the Maori since around 1150, which makes it an ancient and important site. The island has also been home to whaling stations and provided shelter to Captain Cook’s famous ship, the Endeavour, at the end of the 18th century.
One of the must see attractions in Whakatane is the nearby Whakaari or White Island, which is located less than fifty kilometers away from the island, and is where you will find New Zealand’s most active volcano, although with rain forests, reefs and more, the area is rich in natural beauty.
