United Kingdom)
or Winchester accommodation? The city of Winchester, in the South Eastern county of Hampshire, England, is an ancient and historic one. With a history of human inhabitation that spans around two thousand years, it’s no wonder it’s such a popular tourist attraction. Southampton Airport is the nearest airport to the city, and receives daily flights from the UK and Europe; however, you can also reach Winchester by flying to Heathrow, Bournemouth, or Gatwick Airports, and taking a taxi or bus. There are also buses directly to Winchester from a variety of cities in England, as well as trains from London and other cities. If you’re really ambitious or energetic, you could even choose to walk to the city, on the South Downs Way. It is one hundred miles though, so be very sure you’re up for it! The Winchester Cathedral, which was begun by the Normans in 1079, and was in fact built on a raft that floats on the peat marsh, is one of the city’s greatest landmarks. The raft was replaced with a foundation in the 19th century, but nonetheless, for around eight hundred years, this huge structure was floating! For more history, make sure you visit the Old City Centre, where many of the narrow cobbled streets, and the Butter Cross, date back to the 15th century, or make the trip to the now ruined Wolvesey Castle, where the Bishops of Winchester once lived. There are plenty of other medieval remnants in this town, and it’s worth exploring all of them. Festivals are another big attraction in Winchester, and whether you go for the Winchester Hat Fair in July, the Homelands Festival or Alternative Transport day, or any of the other festivals, you’re sure to have fun participating. Restaurants, pubs, hotels and other establishments are plentiful in Winchester, and there really is something to suit every taste. One very interesting establishment, however, that is worth a mention, is the Cathedral Cottage, which is a single room, right next to the famous cottage, that is comfortable and well appointed, and a little bit of an experience in itself. - Browse the Winchester Map or compare Winchester accommodation from Hotels, Motels, B&Bs,
