or Yreka accommodation? Yreka, the county seat of Siskiyou County, is located in the State of California, United States. The city is located on the Shasta Valley that was formed by the Siskiyou Mountains and Mount Shasta, a dormant volcano. Data from the Census of 2000 show that the population of the city is at 7,290; it also has a total area of 26 square kilometers. Its historic downtown area belongs to the National Register of Historic Places.
It was Abraham Thompson who placed the city on the early maps when he discovered gold in the area, near the Black Gulch, while he was traveling on March 1851 along the Siskiyou Trail. The area soon joined the California Gold Rush and the place was named as “Thompson’s Dry Diggings”. The name was changed several times until the current “Yreka”.
There is no definite account as to what the name means. “White mountain” and “north mountain” are thought to be the meaning of the “Yreka” word in Shasta Indian language. However, Mark Twain gives a different account in that the city supposedly got its name from a painted sign for a bakery that was left to dry. A stranger passed by and erroneously thought that the name of the place was the reverse of the “bakery” minus the “b”.
