It is comprised of 29.1 square kilometers of land and 0.7 square kilometers of water (parts of the Muskingum River and Licking River). Based on the 2000 Census data, the city has 25,586 residents. The city was named after Ebenezer Zane who first settled in the area in 1797.
With its rich deposits of clay, Zanesville became an important producer of pottery in the first half of the 20th century – with companies Roseville Pottery and American Encaustic Tiling Co. leading the pottery production.
Tourists in Zanesville can trace the city’s history through the outdoor rubbing wall at the John McIntire Library.
