Zwickau is situated at the base of Erzgebirge and is the fourth major city in Saxony behind Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig. It is also apart of the industrial heart of the Chemnitz-Zwickau economic area. The city was the middle of Anabaptist movement during 1520-1523 by Thomas Münzer. The Gothic church of St Mary which was restored during the 18th century is remarkable and is worth a visit. The church has a wood-carved altar and pictures by Michael Wohlgemuth with an extraordinary pieta in painted and carved wood done by Peter Breuer Marienkirche. Of all the secular buildings the most remarkable is the 15th century town-hall, which has the municipal archives, including files dating to the 13th century and a signed MS. of the achievements of Hans Sachs. Other attraction includes the 15th century Gothic Gewandhaus which also has a theatre. You can also visit the Horch Museum which offers a diverse collection which is dedicated to the town's history, art and palaeontological, mineralogical and geological collection with numerous specimens from the area and Erzgebirge Mountains.
