more » The Northern Territory (NT) is the gateway to the real Outback, a spiritual journey into the 40,000 year history of the Aborignal people, their land and culture. The top end truly has a different story to tell, and is an escape from the hectic modern day bustle of Sydney Melbourne or Brisbane. Explore the wonders of Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock) and Kakadu, the rich history of Darwin or the unique features of Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek. For a short stay, there is plenty of Northern territory holiday accommodation available.
Let’s start our journey in Darwin, the NT’s vibrant capital with a rich history as a WWII allied military base and a disaster zone in the cyclone of 1974, where the city had to be rebuild after Cyclone Tracy. But there is even more to Darwin a town of only 100,000 people - it is made up of more than 50 different nationalities and is a melting pot for festivities, cuisine and events. Darwin accommodation is varied, from hotel stays and holiday parks to camping grounds and motels. Be sure to visit Litchfield National Park , the Tiwi Islands or the Mary River National Park for a sense of local adventure, eco lodging and history. Heading east towards Kakadu and you enter a timeless world of aboriginal culture, rock art and unique bio-diversity. Kakadu is the largest national park in Australia and is rich withlush wetlands, magnificent wildlife, and not to mention plenty of crocodiles (in fact there is a crocodile shaped hotel that is well worth a visit or a short stay) – the Holiday Inn Jaibru. South towards Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs you reach Uluru Ayers Rock, a magnificent icon of the Australian Outback. This famous sandstone rock is 40kms from the Olgas, a pile of rock domes spotted in the red sand. Resort accommodation is available with Voyages, alternately there are camp sites near by. The NT, its national parks, deserts and the red centre all provide for a truly unique holiday experience. For an outback adventure, there is no where else in the world like the Northern Territory. « less |
